"Freeing yourself from an abusive situation is not an event, it is a process," said Sherry Aaron, director of the Victim Advocacy Center at Florida International University.
She designed the initial screening questionnaire. Aaron said because domestic violence cases are very complex, "women have to learn to manage their lives according to their own particular situation." "The solution isn't always leaving," Aaron said. "The solution is safety. There is always the hope that the batterers will get treatment, and over time learn what is acceptable behavior and what is not," she said.
