Shelly Sun, Chief Executive Officer, Co-Founder
When she and her husband, J.D., launched the BrightStar Care franchise, it was the first and only franchising company in the country to specialize in both medical and non-medical care and health care staffing. Shelly has guided the rapid and strategic growth of BrightStar Care from one corporate-owned location in 2005, to more than 260 locations nationwide. The Women Presidents Organization and American Express Open recognized BrightStar Care as #1 in their Top 50 Fastest-Growing Women-Led Organizations in 2011 and 2012, moving up from #2 in 2010. In spring 2011, Shelly and BrightStar were featured on the hit CBS series "Undercover Boss. Shelly was selected as the International Franchise Association's (IFA) Entrepreneur of the Year for 2009, becoming not only the youngest recipient of this impressive award, but also only the second female recipient. Shelly Sun came up in the corporate workplace, was very successful in it, and if things had gone differently she might have stayed there.
But in 2001, on the cusp of getting married, her fiancé's grandmother fell ill and Shelly became the go-to person for finding an in-home care provider. What she found was shocking. "No matter how much I was willing to spend, we could only find Wallmart-level quality and service," she said. We couldn't find Nordstrom or Niemen Marcus." Time passed and eventually so did her husband's grandmother. But Shelly couldn't shake the experience of being willing to pay more for a better healthcare experience but not being able to find one. That personal experience fueled a passion in her to launch BrightStar Care, which provides home care for adults and elder citizens; childcare, including newborn care, babysitter and nanny services; and medical staffing services for individuals, families, and healthcare facilities. BrightStar Care began with 2-3 locations. It now has 315 locations, $350 million in system-wide sales, and just signed agreements for Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. For the last three years, it has received the prestigious Enterprise Champion for Quality designation by the Joint Commission, a not-for- profit organization that accredits more than 21,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. "And I still have 100% of the stock in the company," Shelly said to a rousing ovation. Shelly is a great example of a woman succeeding in franchising. But she's not standing still. Already a member of the IFA executive board, she will be installed as the organization's chairwoman in 2017 and 2018. "We invested in technology before we ever franchised," Shelly said, and credits that spending as enabling her company to scale quickly.

"(CEO) Shelly (Sun) has been investing in technology since the very beginning, to the tune of millions of dollars a year, and that investment ensures the technology will continue to drive improvement and efficiencies for our owners as the home care market evolves."
