SANFORD - Despite a recent job change, Lee County Board of Education Chairman Shawn Williams'
campaign for re-election will move forward as planned, Williams said Monday.
Until recently, Williams served as pastor at Sanford's Fair Promise AME Zion Church.
is no longer affiliated with the AME Zion Church
, and he
is instead launching an independent, non-denominational Christian church in Lee County called God's Promise.
The congregation now worships at 8 a.m. Sundays on Main Street in Broadway.
"I'm staying in Sanford, so it doesn't mean anything for the campaign," Williams
In the AME Zion Church
, bishops assign pastors to certain congregations, Williams
said, and they have the authority to send pastors to different locations if it best serves the needs of the church.
"When there's a need, they can move you," he
said the district bishop wanted to move him to a church in Harnett County.
But after prayer and deliberation, Williams
family decided to remain in Lee County.
"I've always said when it became a job and not a ministry, then it was no longer where I needed to be," Williams
