We're now into the second half of the season, and the next three events will set the stage for who makes the Bassmaster Classic and who won't. Shaw Grigsby
Shaw Grigsby But as the 2015 Shell Rotella Challenge Cup prepared for Elimination Day Two to begin in the Sportsman's Paradise, Grigsby frowned a bit as he burrowed deeper into his Simms Fishing Gore-Tex gear. The frown was due to the unusually chilly fall weather gripping the Shreveport area after severe weather and a strong cold front passed through the area. "I'm a Florida boy, I like it hot," laughed Grigsby, suddenly reverting back to one of professional fishing's most likable personalities. "I don't care when, how or what, (I like it warm). No, it doesn't excite me but I'm just going to play the fish as they go, that's all there is to it." At least Grigsby has some familiarity with northern Louisiana bass fisheries to fall back on, right? "None," said Grigsby. "We've fished very little other than the Red River up here. It'll be exciting to see where we will be going and what we can catch." That being said, Grigsby did admit that the types of fisheries in northern Louisiana aren't much different from some of the fisheries that the nine-time winner on the B.A.S.S. tournament circuits typically finds in other parts of the southern U.S. In fact, the fisheries here are similar to the ones that the winner of more than $2 million dollars in Bassmaster tournament competition has triumphed on, water bodies such as Texas' Sam Rayburn and Florida's Harris Chain of Lakes, the St. John's River, Lake Seminole and the Kissimmee Chain to name a few. While Grigsby didn't know where he would be fishing on Elimination Day Two at the time of this interview, it was conducted in the Holiday Inn hotel parking lot serving as the week's tournament headquarters, his face brightened considerably at the thought of the fisheries that could be waiting in the wings. "Absolutely," said Grigsby. "There should be some cypress trees and some vegetation and stuff. It ought to be wood and vegetation, shallow (and such), and it should be a fun lake (wherever we fish)." Seeking to add some humor to the very early interview, I asked Grigsby if he had any drop-shot rigs ready to go for the morning's upcoming round. "Oh yeah," he guffawed. "At least one!" "They are incredible," admitted Grigsby. "Every time we come to a Major League Fishing event, I post all of the leadoff groups (on my social media accounts to see what the fans think). "You want to sit there and go 'Well, this one is tougher than this one,' and 'This one is tougher than that one,' but they're not. They're really evenly spaced (out talent wise) and every one of them is tough." While Grigsby has a goal of eventually winning the 2015 Challenge Cup event, his main focus for Elimination Day Two is to simply make the cut and advance to Sudden Death. "It would be incredible," said Grigsby, a bit more serious all of a sudden, perhaps betraying how much he wants to win an MLF Cup title. "That's the goal, every time. "Traditionally in Major League Fishing, I either get smashed in the first round or I go on to make a good run," smiled Grigsby. "We'll see what happens." Which led to my next question of Grigsby: Would he prefer to start strong and hang on to the end of the third period or would he rather stay in striking distance and close the gap late? "I generally hang on for dear life," laughed Grigsby. "Generally, whether I start slow or fast, I'm still hanging on for dear life anyway. We'll just see what happens." One thing that most of the competitors are hoping to see happen during the MLF visit to northern Louisiana is to catch a few of the big largemouths that the region is known for. Something of a big fish specialist, Grigsby is hoping for that occurrence too. "You know, the object is to figure them out, to figure them out fast and catch as many as you can," he said. "If I can figure something out for a big one, that will even be better." With the addition of two more anglers to the field, MLF pros who qualified through the 2015 Bass Pro Shops Challenge Select, does Grigsby anticipate the SCORETRACKER LIVE leaderboard to sing a bit faster than it has in the past? "Absolutely," he said. "When you go from an eight-man field to a 10-man field, it happens much more quickly out there and it's much more intense. It's just upped the ante that much more." And with that, Grigsby smiled the big mustachioed smile that is he is famous for, polished off the remainder of his morning coffee and turned to go see what the day might bring, other than the chilly early fall temperatures more suited for a Louisiana duck blind than the front deck of a Major League Fishing bass boat.
