The act of helping around the house is critical to teach kids responsibility, the value of work and the sense of contributing to the family good, say experts in a recent special section on Back to School published by the Scarsdale Inquirer, which quoted St. Patrick's own principal Mrs. Sharyn O'Leary extensively for a story on the Power of Chores for Children.
Time spent helping around the house "also can be a time for building relationships and team work and some special Kids and Chores time with a parent of sibling," said Mrs. O'Leary in the story. It can also give children some much-needed quiet time for contemplation. "Dusting, folding laundry, walking the dog - all afford children time to be alone with themselves and think and reflect," she said. "Each middle school student has received an individual Chromebook, which they carry with them from my class to the science lab to their social studies class ... wherever they may be learning during the day," explained Mrs. Sharyn O'Leary, principal.
