It's a historic road and it is very typical of roads in natural parks designed as scenic roads that have low speeds," said Sharon Ringsven, a ranger at Haleakala National Park."For myself and another ranger, who has been here 20-plus years, this is the first motor vehicle fatality in the park in more than 20 years."The accident occurred on a stretch of roadway that runs beside a steep drop-off.There are three plastic reflector poles marking the gulch, but no guardrails.In a previous interview, Ringsven said a similar accident at the same spot occurred three or four years ago, but no one was injured.

The driver, Bernard Ortolan, 60, of Sceaux, France, was the sole survivor of Thursday's accident, park Ranger Sharon Ringsven said.He was at Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious but stable condition.Ortolan's 58-year-old wife, Anne Verger, died in the accident, along with Philippe Chaigneau, 49, and Rolande Andina, 65, both of Paris, Ringsven said.

A fourth French tourist, the driver, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious but stable condition, said Sharon Ringsven, a ranger at Haleakala National Park.It may have hit the opposite-side embankment and rolled back into the gulch," Ringsven said.Ringsven said there had been a similar accident at that same spot three or four years ago, with no injuries.A passing motorist reported yesterday's accident.When authorities arrived, they found the driver, a man in his 60s, walking around outside the car, Ringsven said.The three people killed were in the car - a woman in her 60s, and a man and woman in their 30s.It was not known if they were wearing seat belts.The people are French nationals and part of larger tour group of about a dozen other people who were exploring the park in separate vehicles yesterday, Ringsven said.
