Sioux City Journal: Aktion Club receives charter

The new charter -- Aktion Club -- allows developmentally disabled people to work with the community through service projects and fund-raisers, said Sharon Ocker, Kiwanis Club adviser for Aktion Club.Aktion members have been meeting since April, Ocker said.Tuesday's banquet at Sunrise Retirement Community served as a formal initiation for the charter.The group received its banner and gong and each member received a charter pin, Ocker said.The Kiwanis Club in Morningside sponsors the new members, Ocker said.Aktion Clubs exist in other Iowa towns, but this is the first for Sioux City, Ocker said.The Aktion Club will meet every first and third Tuesday of the month at Redeemer Lutheran Church.The gatherings will have a pledge, prayer and program, Ocker said.The new charter is currently filled to capacity, Ocker said.Anyone interested in started another Aktion Club group should contact Ocker at 276-9336.
