Shabir Shah seeks Indo-Pak election commission
...
If they can constitute joint business council why not a joint election commission," asserted Shabir Ahmad Shah, President Democratic Freedom Party. Shah is cautious when reacting to the joint statement signed by Pakistan President and Indian Prime Minister."It is too early to decipher what the word final settlement used in the statement stands for. But, it sounds significant that the Indian leadership admits the disputed nature of J&K.Still, I believe the flexibility claimed by India should be more visible so that people here can feel a sense of achievement. Both the leaders are expected to be conscious of the fact that people's involvement is paramount to the success of their new found friendship," Shah stressed. To a question about the raising expectation among Indian and Pakistani societies Shabir Shah said people in both countries have of late grown conscious of the fact that the perpetual hostility was bleeding their economy."But if people's desire in New Delhi and Islamabad is being considered so seriously why not our sacrifices. If the slogans that people are actually driving both countries toward reconciliation hold any ground then why not make the whole process more legitimate by providing people of Jammu and Kashmir a chance to decide their political future," DFP President asserts.
Asked whether the joint elections across LoC would be inclusive with mainstream leaders contesting as well, Shabir Shah maintained his model of democratic contest was unrestricted."This is ridiculous that those assuming power have the mandate of a few thousand people that too by virtue of a coercive exercise.Let them testify their claims, so shall we," he averred. To the question whether a joint effort by India and Pakistan would replace the need of UN supervision, his earlier argument for a joint election in both parts of Kashmir, Shabir Shah replied that both the countries were aware of the backlash of any coercion or rigging. He, however, appears non-committal on any possible UN role in the future scheme of things aimed at resolving the 57-year-old dispute between India and Pakistan. On the security issue Shabir Shah seeks India to be "realistically magnanimous"."This is evident, when I speak of a joint electoral exercise I speak in broader terms. For that to happen we must have conducive atmosphere. But India has to initiate being a state based on lofty ideals of peace and justice.Once India betrays large heartedness We won't be found wanting. If India stops operations across the state, revokes anti-people laws, releases prisoners and restores political freedom; I assure you it won't take longer to take our brethren (militants) on board and convince them for a comprehensive cease fire," envisions Shabir Shah who remains equidistant from both factions of Hurriyat Conference. When quizzed on the contours of his views on the joint electoral exercise Shabir Shah declined to elaborate saying that he has floated an idea "let others join in and work out a structured course."
