Ryoko Muyo - No Need For Ryoko

Seina Yamada, the most unlucky boy in the universe...
Seina Yamada is the most unlucky boy in the world. No, actually, he really is. So much so that his family are actually glad when he ends up in outer space as a cadet for the Galaxy Police. Seina really does not know what he's let himself in for. Killing doesn't seem to be such a taboo in this series, so long as it's pirates the heroes are killing - Ryoko Balta even says "they were only Pirates on board, don't worry" or something along those lines when Seina questions the destruction of a pirate ship by Kamidake II. Whereas other series of Tenchi appear to be geared more towards the romantic relationships of Tenchi and his harem alongside battles for power and control, this series focuses on women in general as a sexual icon, not in terms of genuine love (although Seina does have a genuine crush on Kiriko born out of his childhood). Equally, there is no relationship tension or any hint of it when Seina goes back to see Tenchi and his group of girls - though Ayeka and Ryoko fight, there's really no romantic spark between him and any of the women. Seina also seems to become a captain in his own right amazingly quickly.

It actually focuses on a scrawnier kid named Seina Yamada, a boy with a penchant for getting into horrible accidents through no fault of his own.
When he visits Tenchi's place and is almost accidentally drowned when a sexy young Galaxy Police officer named Amane parks her spacecraft nearby at the same time, a series of events follows which sees his parents, fed up with the medical expenses he racks up every time he takes a breath of oxygen, inadvertently ship him off to the Galaxy Police Academy. From there, Seina is whisked away into a fabulous lifestyle of becoming an officer of the Galaxy Police, where thanks to some *ahem* encouragement from Amane, Kiriko, his crush from back home on Earth, and a space pirate named Ryoko (no, not THAT Ryoko, this is a different girl), he learns to use his natural ability to attract misfortune in the ongoing fight against space pirates. One of the things I like about Tenchi Muyo! was that its title character does not act like a lustful teenager towards the women who have suddenly come into his life, but was actually very polite and acted like an absolute gentleman, no matter how often his new houseguests drove him crazy. In this series, however, Seina doesn't even have to TRY that hard. It seems the number one thing Nabeshin got from Tenchi Muyo! was the space-girls-fighting-over-one-guy scenario, which he repeatedly exploits at random with the fan service turned up to eleven. Nearly everywhere Seina goes, he is ambushed by every love-struck female in a fifty-foot radius. (The final episode was especially ridiculous, in which not only does he marry ALL of the female leads, but is later abducted by four other girls during the ceremony…and ends up marrying THEM, too!) Because of this, Seina does not make for a very interesting male lead character and just comes off as a very fortunate dweeb. And what makes it EXTRA creepy is that some of the show's cast are dog creatures, and one of the women he DOES hook up with can disguise herself as a FEMALE dog creature, which just takes it into more uncomfortable territory.

Seina Yamada, Captain of the Galaxy Police anti-pirate ship Kamedake, sat staring, with his chin in his hands and his elbows braced on his knees, at the image of his home planet on the screen before him.
It had been eight months, local, since hehad last stood on the surface of Earth, and five since he had been in this solar system. Five months since his very big, very public and very peculiar wedding to the eight beautiful women scattered, sitting and standing, around the bridge of 'his' ship. She slowed to a stop and both she and the small cabbit she clutched to her chest gave Seina a quick examination with concerned eyes. Relieved expressions spread across both their faces as they launched themselves at the somewhat battered boy. Seina found himself leing on his back with the youngest looking of his eight wives seated firmly on his chest. Seina colored slightly and kissed her back chastley but just as possessively. Seina sat up hurriedly leaving Neiju seated in his lap and burying her furiously blushing face in his chest. Sempi may I present my wife Neiju. He said a little hurriedly. As Seina stood up Tenchi looked around, Anno, where is Fuku-chan? Seina and Neiju looked around wildly for a second then relaxed as they heard a contented Meyaa from the edge of the field where Fuku was sitting eating a carrot in Ryo-oohkis lap. The three of them walked over to where the two cabbits were playing. As they aproched Fuku looked up from her carrot a then jumped in to Seinas arms. Ryo-oohki stood up and bowed politely then gave both Seina and Neiju big hugs, Miyaaing happily the whole time. Its good to see you again to. said Seina. Seina can stay and help me finish up. You can tell Sasami-chan and Noike-san that well come back for lunch. Neiju looked somewhat disappointed at this. Dont worry Neeiju-chan, Ill be fine. Said Seina. Ok she replied then fixed both young men with a fierce glare You will be done soon. Right?! HI! They chorused. Ok then. Ryo-chan, Fuku-chan lets go. As Seina watched Neiju and the two cabbits walk back up the hill and collect her bike, Tenchi went to fetch another hoe and pair of gloves from the shed. If you let me borrow Seina, we can be done by lunch. Neiju looked at Tenchi and Seina with a thoughtful expression. Ok then. Im sure you two have a LOT to catch up on. At this she looked pointedly at her husband. But dont take to long. Ryo-chan, Fuku-chan, lets go. As Seina watched Neiju and the two cabbits walk back up the hill and collect her bike, Tenchi went to fetch another hoe and pair of gloves from the shed. After a few minutes of watching Seina attack the weeds with a ferocious intensity, Tenchi stopped, leaned on his hoe and said, Something on your mind.
