Dr. Sean Smith, medical director of the emergency rooms at Mercy Joplin and Mercy Carthage, and a long-time Carthage resident, said the new emergency room has the latest technology to help get the best care possible to patients as quickly as possible.

Smith, who was medical director at the emergency room in the former St. John's hospital, said the department had outgrown that original ER and hospital officials were discussing building a new one before the tornado struck and made the decision for them. Page 2 of 3 - "Unfortunately the tornado happened and we needed a whole new hospital to go with it, but we had input from day one," Smith said. "We got it the hard way, no doubt about it. We had a disaster, the loss of life. As terrible as that was, fortunately we have been able to see some good come out of that loss. This facility and this ER is some of that good that's come out of it four years later." Smith said the ER has 34 rooms. Six rooms will be used full time for trauma and resuscitation for patients with major trauma, chest pain, respiratory distress and other emergencies. Six rooms are designed specifically to hold emergency psychiatric patients. Two rooms are designed as "negative pressure" rooms and can be used to treat highly contagious patients. "For things as simple as someone with the flu all the way to if we ever see Ebola," Smith said. "We have those negative pressure rooms." Keeping it close Smith said the ER has advanced services such as CAT scans, X-ray rooms and catheterization rooms located within feet of the entrance of door where patients are brought in. "We have the ICU, surgery and radiology all right next to the emergency department," Smith said.
Smith said he and others involved in designing the new hospital and the new emergency department visited hospitals across the country to get ideas, but many of the concepts for the new Mercy Joplin came from his own backyard. "The interesting thing, now that I've worked in both ERs, in Joplin and Carthage, is how much of the same design elements are in both facilities," Smith said.
