Desperate is about how Sabine Pass school secretary Scottie Berg felt when she found herself freezing in a donated tent with her three children, including an 18-year-old son who just got out of Army boot camp and now expects deployment to Iraq.
Relatives eventually found a one-room travel trailer for the family, but then it sprang a leak when it rained the day after Thanksgiving.
"We tried to, I guess, kind of laugh at it and just say it was bringing us closer together," Berg
said."And then you have those days where the least little thing brings you to tears."Berg
is still waiting for a loan from the Small Business Administration
wants to use the money to elevate her
trailer the required 6 feet, a job she
has been told could cost $20,000.But Berg and Charlene Lewis, the school janitor who used to live in her mother's house on Buford Street, finally got some good news.
