Scott R. Long, a principal with Rockford Associates Planners+Architects and president of the northern Illinois chapter of the American Institute of Architects, said he, too, is "concerned with the selection process of design firms with large public work."
"Politics and money seem to be much more important than skill and passion," he
"Rockford has many qualified and talented design firms that can handle any construction project in our community.Out-of-town large firms migrate to Rockford when large projects are needed. After construction is completed, these large firms leave town and our community behind to start work on a new project."
As County Board members are debating whom to hire to guide the jail project, the River District, an advocacy group for downtown redevelopment, is bringing together local architects to form a design group. They want to discuss details - such as streetlamps, benches, paving and the like - that could give the downtown area a sense of a unified whole.
