Last month, Holocaust revisionist Scott Lively
came to visit Oklahoma City.
Lively tells his
fictitious story of how LGBT's are responsible for the Holocaust, to any desperate person who will listen.
Scott Lively is the director of the Abiding Truth Ministries located in Springfield Massachusetts.
is listed on the Southern Law Poverty Centers list of hate groups and Scott Lively
is directly linked to pending legislation in Uganda that calls for severe punishment of homosexuals including long prison terms and death.
is currently being sued in Federal Court under the Alien Tort Statute for inciting the persecution of gay men and lesbians.
Needless to say, I had no idea what to expect-would we be in an auditorium filled with Oklahomans eager to learn Scott Lively's
lesson plan on how to eradicate homosexuals along with the homosexual political agenda?
Would there be protesters outside where I would have to explain why I would be going to listen to someone like this?
And who attends this church where hate is invited to speak from the pulpit - the place that is considered holy in any church?
As we pulled into the parking lot on this overcast morning I noticed it was almost empty.
I did not see one protestor, not one sign of disruption, and the police officer who was assigned to protect Scott Lively
sauntered into the church eating a donut and talking on his
As we walked into the church we were welcomed and told the seminar was down the hall in the classroom.
The classroom was very small with the chairs crammed into it.
We took our seats and soon Scott Lively
was at the podium and ready to teach his
message of hate and intolerance.
I looked around and counted about thirty seven people, including myself and my partner.
talk by spending about forty-five minutes defending his
actions in Uganda and trying to distance himself from the bill as it is currently presented.
then moved to the Southern Poverty Law Center and degraded that group for not having a definition of hate or hate group and talking about its "liberal private funding".
Next was the Federal lawsuit which he
flippantly dismissed as frivolous.
I have decided not to spend much effort repeating any of his
message, as it seems Scott Lively's
message is generally about Scott Lively
ludicrous hate speech.
is the consummate victim - just ask him!
During the seminar, Mr. Lively
made the statement that Oklahoma was the "reddest of the red states" and that is when it hit me.
This man has no power and nothing to say even in the Bible Belt of Oklahoma.
I looked around and realized this is the best he
could do in the "reddest of the red states".
Thirty seven people primarily elderly church members, the pastor and his
wife and a few young men who seemed to be struggling with their own sexuality.
Oh yes, and one gay married couple!!
While it is slow in coming, change is happening.
Truth, love and acceptance will win over hatred and lies.
Even as I write this we have heard our sitting President endorse gay marriage and call for a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.
Despite Scott Lively's
efforts to degrade and demean LGBT persons with his
ridiculous rhetoric, I left that seminar proud of the people of Oklahoma City who chose not to be a part of this message of hate and intolerance.
