It's hard getting past that," said Scott Harrison, head pro at Highlands Cove.

Head professional Scott Harrison already lived in the area when construction began. It still took him aback when he first toured the course."Once I was hired and got out there to see some of those views I was just blown away," Harrison said.

"From the first green looking southwest you can see Whitesides Mountain (the highest sheer rock outcropping in the East), and Devil's Courthouse," said Harrison, a Gastonia native who played golf at Western Carolina.
...
"It's 300 feet down to the lowest part of the fairway," said Harrison."I played with a guy recently who drove the green. That ball was in the air forever, probably pushing 10 seconds."The Cove Nine is the antithesis of the Highlands. It meanders through a flatter parcel of property, often crossing mountain streams. Most holes are level, with only a few elevated tees.Harrison is partial to the 404-yard 11th hole.

But not to worry, says Scott Harrison, head professional at Highlands Cove."We'll be happy to tell you what club you need to hit on a given hole.On the second hole, which measures 190 yards from the back tee, I tell people to simply use whatever club you hit 150 yards.By the way, we're talking about making these ‘actual yardage' tips part of our scorecard in the near future."
Along with vertical drops, other terrain challenges come into play on North Carolina's mountain courses, as well.Like sloped fairways, for example.
