Jonathan Saunders is the most feted darling of the catwalk, a Glasgwegian whose fizz-bomb frocks in acid-bright geometric patterns are making fans of Kylie and Madonna and producing healthy sales worldwide from New York to Tokyo.Jonathan Saunders is the most feted darling of the catwalk, a Glasgwegian whose fizz-bomb frocks in acid-bright geometric patterns are making fans of Kylie and Madonna and producing healthy sales worldwide from New York to Tokyo. But I'll have to scale it up a bit, her tits are massive…" Jonathan Saunders may not be typically Glaswegian, but he's Glaswegian nonetheless. Last month, London Fashion Week, in the tradition of the last few years, was condemned as a listless failure, Britain's only media-approved success the psychedelic science of the 26-year-old Scotsman currently spilling the contents of a polystyrene lunch-box all over his enormous, loose-fit jeans. His friends call him Captain Chaos; he leaves his lap-top on trains, loses his keys. Jonathan Saunders graduated from London's St Martin's College of Art and Design in 2002 (aged 24), his degree show, featuring a commotion of acid-bright kaftans, propelled him overnight to international acclaim.Saunders' dizzy-hued brave-art present is all the more striking in the context of his stringent past; son of two austere, English ministers who moved to Rutherglen, Glasgow, 35 years ago. He's uncomfortable talking about his parents. "Just very traditional," he manages, "both Christian, very devout.Lovely people, reserved, really humble." It was a disciplined upbringing, "stable, but very strict", he and big sister Naomi were brought up by parents who "lived to the bible very strongly, which I don't particularly any more, at all in fact. But I respect their beliefs".Today, there's an estrangement of sorts. (He hasn't been home since 1999.) By 16, Saunders knew "without a shadow of a doubt" he'd eventually move to London.Leaving Stonelaw with As in higher art, history, English, craft and design and a B in biology, he moved, as soon as possible, to a flat in sketchy Gallowgate (above Rita's Fashions) and began a product design degree at Glasgow School of Art.SAUNDERS moved to London in 1999, so broke he "lived in a cupboard", and became a star student at St Martin's.Mid-way through his now-mythological degree show, he became creatively "stuck", so he looked to psychotropic inspiration, dropping a tab of acid and watching endless repeats of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine and Pink Floyd's The Wall. (If Saunders was Bobby Gillespie, this show was his Screamadelica.) "Not that I'm endorsing taking drugs," he balks, "but everybody's taken drugs."So," beams Saunders, "Lacroix came in, took over as the new creative director, wanted someone to do some new prints and they picked me.This year, Jonathan Saunders has entered, by association, Celebrity Culture."D'you think?"he says."Celeb Saunders.Oh my God.I don't see myself as any kind of celebrity at all.I'm a clothes designer. There's nothing to be a celebrity about." Recent reports of the death of Celebrity, of a backlash against the tyranny of elitist labels, Saunders sees as premature."Nah," he chirps, "it's the same.Basically."His ambition, now, is only for "longevity". But Jonathan will most definitely evolve."I'm doing a print all over a wind turbine," says Saunders, delighted, "a massive wind turbine!
