Sara Morman, public information officer with the ODH, said the department is currently reviewing the bill, and plans to work with the sponsors and other interested stakeholders.

Sara Morman, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Health, said there was one case each of salmonella infection in the counties of Athens, Clinton, Fairfield, Lucas, Tuscarawas and Union, and three cases in Franklin County.
Three of the cases resulted in hospitalization, and one of those three died. The death, however, was unrelated to the salmonella infection, she said. The Ohioans became sick between Oct. 6 and Nov. 30. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have linked 184 illnesses to the strain of salmonella Montevideo since July 1. While the illnesses appear to have stopped, Morman said the state is still helping local health departments monitor any new cases that may crop up.

"We also hope hospitals will use this site as a tool to inspire better service by comparing measures with other facilities," said Sara Morman with the Ohio Department of Health Office of Public Affairs.
She said legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly in 2006 required the Web site to be online by Jan.1, 2010. "The bill created a Hospital Measures Advisory Council, and allowed for collection of data on all of the state's hospitals, which took the most time to complete," Morman said. She noted that other states offer similar Web sites, and many provide some information about Ohio hospitals, but the Ohio Hospital Compare site contains more in-depth data that's specific to the Buckeye State. Morman said the Web site should be considered as a means to an end. "We want people to understand that this is just a starting point," she said. "Patients should talk to their doctors and consider their insurance coverage. "If there's an emergency people should go to the nearest hospital immediately, but if they're looking at a planned visit, this Web site can empower consumers to make better decisions about their health care," Morman added.
