rt can be an extremely important outlet for children of all ages and thanks to the research being done by Sara Hand, art education specialist at the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation department, we may one day know how art affects the lives of children years after they leave elementary school.sara handWhile in elementary school children get the opportunity to take art classes as part of their curriculum, however when they move on to middle and high school it becomes an option along with band, drama and sports.Art appreciation tends to get overlooked by students and teachers after the elementary level.None the less, art can play a very important part in the lives of all children of many different ages."Art serves as a creative outlet for children and gives them a chance to claim their own identity and create something from their heart," said Hand."It can really be an important way for children of all ages to communicate and express their imagination.Hand received her undergraduate degree from Auburn University in ceramics and went on to receive her master's degree in Art Education with certification from the University of Georgia. She has taken the position of Art Education Specialist with the City of Auburn in the ceramics studio while she finishes her thesis research. She also teaches at the after school program at Wrights Mill Road Elementary School.adventures in artHer reserach is focused on the impact art has on third to fifth grade students one year after they complete a course in art.She has made art an interdisciplinary focus in her classroom, stressing how art can help with science, math and problem solving skills.Hand has many hopes and aspirations of what the ceramics program can be at the City of Auburn and she also hopes to get funding from the Alabama State Council of the Arts to bring in funding for classes in the ceramics studio.Art can be a very important part of the development of children of all ages and with Hand's research we will be able to see this connection.
