Biographical Note: Sanford Gifford was a well-known psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, historian, and the BPSI Archives Director from 2000 through 2013. He served as the Hanns Sachs Library Director from 1966 to 2000, taught many BPSI seminars, and helped to develop the BPSI Archives. The creator of our unique Oral History Interviews project, Dr. Gifford recorded conversations with noted psychoanalysts and their relatives for over forty years. Even in retirement he continued teaching at the Harvard Medical School, working at the West Roxbury VA hospital, and chairing the History and Archives Committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association. In May of 2013, several months before his death, Dr. Gifford received an award for the Lifetime Contribution to the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He is the author of numerous publications. Please refer to p.3-4 and 6 of the fall 2013 issue of the library newsletter for his bibliography articles about Sanford Gifford.

Latest additions include recently written articles and book reviews. Please note that many Gifford's materials could be found in the Related BPSI Collections listed below. The Oral History collections feature interviews conducted and recorded by Dr. Sanford Gifford. In 2014, 639 audio-cassettes and 22 cartons of papers have been added to the Sanford Gifford archive.
