SANDRA K. REMINGAExecutive Director, Area Agency on Aging 1-BSandra K. Reminga is the Executive Director of the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, an organization responsible for assuring that home care and community based services are available to help older adults maintain their independence and dignity, while continuing to live in a setting of their choice.Sandy created the Area Agency on Aging 1-B in 1974 shortly after Congress amended the federal Older Americans Act.
Congress wanted to see Area Agencies on Aging
throughout the United States.These Area Agencies on Aging
were to identify the problems confronting older adults and what services needed to exist that were most vital in meeting their needs.Prior to starting the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, Sandy was with United Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit in their Oakland Division office where she served as the Assistant Director, and worked on many issues affecting older adults and persons with disabilities.She also served as a Director of a Senior Center in Southwest Detroit for the UAW Retired Workers Centers in the late 1960s and early 1970s.Sandy holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Michigan State University, and a Master's Degree in Social Work from Wayne State University where she specialized in social planning and advocacy.She
also holds a Specialist in Aging certificate from the Institute of Gerontology
through Wayne State and the University of Michigan
.She has served as President of the Michigan Association of Area Agencies on Aging, and is currently a member of the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC) Aging Committee formulating joint advocacy strategies.
