"It's really exciting," echoed Sandy Akina, co-owner of the Akina bus lines, adding that she has been waiting for more than a decade to get a public mass-transit project started.
The firm's new Wailuku-Kahului bus system will carry passengers from its West Maui and South Maui routes to connections with an MEO shuttle-bus system.
The bus connections will be provided at seven stops: Ka Hale A Ke Ola, the State Office Building, Iao Theater/Market Street
, Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center
, Maui Mall
and Wal-Mart/Dairy Road
To assist in the bus-shuttle operation, Maui County provided a $100,000 subsidy to Akina
to provide a transportation service that accommodates Maui residents as well as visitors.
"Without the three of us together (county, Akina
, MEO), the central hookup would not have been possible, not at this time," Levine said.
