Dr. Samir Fahmy, a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician at SUNY-Downstate, gave the literature review on the definition of hypopneas.In his presentation Dr. Fahmy discussed the history of the hypopnea and how its definition has changed over time.He highlighted the high degree of variability that exists in the definition and the efforts that have been ongoing to define these events in a way that reflects their importance in sleep disordered breathing disturbances and reflects contemporary practice.At the end of his presentation, he updated members on the current working definition of hypopneas as recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), which has been proposed to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), formerly HCFA.
