Chair Sami earned her B.A. in Spanish from San José State and is now a financial analyst at SJSU. Beyond her work at San Jose State, Sami has been involved in community activities throughout the Bay Area. Locally, she has served as the President of the McKinley/Bonita Neighborhood Association. Sami's passion for gardening inspired her to remove the front lawn of her downtown San José home and build garden beds which provide three local families with a place to grow their own vegetables. In addition to gardening, Sami is a dedicated supporter of local animal rescue organizations, and has also been a loving foster mom to numerous puppies and dogs in need.

The raised garden beds that Lerma recently admired are in the frontyard of Sami Monsur, 48, multilingual resource analyst at San Jose State.
When a few residents came to her, in her capacity as president of the neighborhood association, Monsur recalled, "I said, 'You know, I've been wanting to get rid of my front lawn.

Sami Monsur, of San Jose, takes great pride in her gear, from her $300 Scorpion EXO-1100 Solid Helmet to the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, that she cut from a pillow case and sewed to the back of her leather jacket.
Monsur, a resource analyst in the College of Education at San Jose State University, gets constant honks of approval when weaving through traffic on her silver-and-white Honda Shadow 750.

"I don't look at the front yard as my property," Garden to Table Chair Sami Monsur said.
"I really look at it as a neighborhood garden." In 2007, Sami moved to her neighborhood in Central San Jose. After starting the neighborhood association in the area, Sami decided to open up her front yard to families who didn't have their own land to grow fresh fruit and vegetables. And since then, they've been harvesting fresh produce from her front yard. "By giving the neighbors ownership, one can be pleasantly surprised at how it gives them a piece of Mexico and a piece of soil to have of their own," Sami said.
