Samantha McFerrin, Editor
Harcourt Children's Books (2004)
Samantha McFerrin graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in English and an emphasis in journalism and film. In May 2003, she decided to move from San Francisco, where she was working as an assistant editor with Chronicle Books, to New York. She wanted to become part of the traditional New York children's book publishing community. Working as a children's book editor with Harcourt has been a dream come true.
Harcourt only accepts manuscripts sent by agents. Samantha is no longer able to accept unsolicited manuscripts at her New York address except from writers and illustrators she meets at conferences.

Samantha McFerrin Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Books Samantha McFerrin is an editor at Harcourt Children's Books where she acquires and edits picture books and middle grade and young adult fiction. At the moment, she's working hard to grow her fiction list. Some subjects that grab her attention are unusual love stories, authentic urban fiction, stories for boys (though not really sport stories), mysteries, magical realism, and stories told from a unique cultural perspective. She is the editor of the Geisel Honor book Jazz Baby by Lisa Wheeler, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie; the Pura Belpre Illustrator Award winner Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book by Yuyi Morales; and the Charlotte Zolotow Honor book In a Blue Room by Jim Averbeck, illustrated by Tricia Tusa. Samantha previously worked as a children's book editor for Chronicle Books in San Francisco.

"A family story can involve any range of family members, just two or a whole slew!," adds Samantha McFerrin, editor at Harcourt Children's Books.

"In a story about an individual you can have a very character-driven story, which doesn't mean a family story can't have a strong lead character," says McFerrin.
"I think family stories that involve issues really bring the whole family into the spotlight," says McFerrin.
"I think it's shifting toward unconventional families," says McFerrin, "because that market has broadened some.
"Families are important subjects for books for young readers and they make for great, great stories," says McFerrin.
