Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Chennai, India and Prof. Samad Shera, Director, Secretary General, Diabetes Association of Pakistan and the launch of logo depicting 40 years of diabetes research.

Celebrating 40 years of diabetes research, the oldest and the first diabetes research center (DRC) in Asia/world, Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Center launched one of the kind initiatives, Indo-Pakistan Diabetes prevention program in the presence of Dr. John E. Anderson, President, American Diabetes Association, Prof Andrew Boulton, President, European Association for study of Diabetes and Prof. Samad Shera, Director, Diabetes Association of Pakistan.

DAP director Prof A Samad Shera gave a brief introduction of the conference.
He said that in Pakistan, 10 percent of younger population has diabetes with a large number of increasing in next few years.
He said that comparison showed that female are more affected by diabetes then men with a ratio of 51 percent of female and 49 percent of male.

The secretary-general of the Diabetic Association of Pakistan, Prof Samad A. Shera, highlighted the epidemic of Type 2 diabetes in Pakistan."In Pakistan Type I diabetes (insulin dependent diabetes) constitutes two per cent of the total diabetic population.Type I diabetes is easy to diagnose with dramatic symptoms of excessive urination, increased thirst and rapid weight loss.The only treatment is with insulin injections and diet control.Sugar lowering drugs have no place in the treatment.All children must have daily insulin blood sugar monitoring.Self glucose monitoring devices have revolutionized the management and control."
