The average warrior on the field wears about 50 to 60 pounds of protective armor, said Sam Cale IV, a pastor from Charleston, who has been taking part in SCA battles for about 16 years. The helmets alone weigh about 8 to 10 pounds, Cale said. Warriors fought for about 15 to 30 minutes, and then a break was called for them to rest. Many collapsed on the ground, drenched in sweat. Their faces were red when the battles ended. "It's exhausting; for every 15 seconds of fighting, that's five minutes of sucking in air after," Cale said. Becoming a member of the SCA was a natural progression, Cale said. "I did martial arts, and I'm also kind of a history geek," he said. Cale also makes all of his armor by hand, and armor for many members of the AEthelmearc kingdom.
