Sam Balderas - WinemakerWinemaking and viticulture have been a major part of Sam Balderas' life since his early teenage years.Born in 1947 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Sam was the eldest of eight children. He and his family moved to the United States in 1960 and settled in San Jose, California. In 1961, Sam began his career in the wine industry, hoeing weeds as a summer job in the vineyard of Martin Ray Winery. He continued to work for Martin Ray in various capacities for the next 13 years.Sam benefited from working in this small winery environment, gaining practical experience in all phases of winemaking operations and vineyard management. It was at Martin Ray that Sam learned the traditional European, hands-on approach he utilizes at Talbott Vineyards today. In 1970, Sam became assistant winemaker at Mirassou Vineyard. For his first three years at Mirassou, Sam maintained a part-time job at Martin Ray, where he continued to refine his winemaking philosophy. At Mirassou, Sam mastered all aspects of winemaking, developing an artisan's palette as well as strong quality control skills. He rose quickly in his trade.Sam left Mirassou in 1980 to become winemaker at Stony Ridge Winery in Pleasanton, California. He remained there until 1985, when he was retained by Talbott Vineyards to consult in the winemaking department.Sam soon became very excited about the prospect of making limited quantities of exceptional Chardonnay from the acclaimed Diamond T Estate Vineyard, and when the Talbotts recognized his tremendous ability and offered him a permanent winemaking position, he eagerly accepted. Today, Sam is winemaker and general manager of Talbott, bringing continuity, excellence and focus to the winery. He also manages 750 acres of Talbott's estate vineyards.Sam believes that the more simply and gently grapes are coaxed into wine, the more of the grapes' unique characteristics show through in the glass. The epitome of a hands-on winemaker, Sam personally monitors and evaluates every barrel in the cellar, developing a relationship with each and every wine he makes. In the cellar and vineyards, Sam exhibits the tranquil confidence of someone with a great depth of knowledge and experience. His intense determination to make only the finest wines is reflected in his meticulous management of the vineyards, the winery, and his staff.Sam and his wife live near the winery in the Salinas Valley.
