Family Law, Divorce, Custody Estate Planning, Wills and Trusts Sally Pokorny is the 2006-2007 President of the Kansas Bar Foundation. A 1978 graduate of Washburn University Law School, Pokorny began her legal career as a assistant district attorney with the Shawnee County District Attorney's office where she prosecuted criminal cases ranging from speeding to first degree murder. For two years she handled all cases involving sex offenses, including prostitution, promoting pornography, rape and aggravated indecent liberties with minors. While in Topeka, Pokorny was an Adjunct Professor for Trial Techniques at Washburn University School of Law. In 1981, Pokorny moved to her hometown of Independence, Kansas to become the Assistant County Attorney and, in 1985, she was elected County Attorney for a four year term. Thereafter, she entered into private practice, with an emphasis in family law, the enforcement and collection of child support, and criminal defense. Pokorny is a recipient of the Kansas Bar Association Outstanding Service Award, recipient of Kansas Bar Association Recognition for Pro Bono Commitment, is a Kansas Bar Foundation Fellow, recipient of "Women Helping Women" award from Soroptimist International of Independence, and Business and Professional Women's Association "Woman of the Year" award. Pokorny is the mother of Brian and Mike, who both attend their parents' and maternal grandparents' alma mater, Washburn University. After practicing law in Independence, Kansas for over 25 years, Pokorny relocated her practice to Lawrence, Kansas and is "of counsel" with The Law Office of David J. Brown.

Sally D. Pokorny District Court Judge Pokorny was appointed as District Judge in the 7th Judicial District in January 2009. Judge Pokorny handles all types of civil cases as well as felony and misdemeanor cases. She is a graduate of Washburn University and Washburn University School of Law. Prior to being appointed to the bench, Judge Pokorny engaged in the general practice of law and served as Assistant District Attorney in Shawnee County and County Attorney and Assistant County Attorney in Montgomery County. She was also employed as an attorney with the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in the Child Support Enforcement division. Judge Pokorny is a member of the Douglas County Bar Association and the Kansas Bar Association, serving on various committees. She is a member of the Kansas Bar Foundation where she has been trustee for 12 years and has also served as secretary, vice president, president-elect and president. In addition, Judge Pokorny is a District Representative in the Kansas Women Attorneys Association and a member of the Lawrence Women Attorneys Association. As one of her greatest strengths, Judge Pokorny states that due to her varied background in the types of cases she handled as a lawyer she has a good working knowledge of many areas of the law. In addition, her experience representing clients on all sides of the issues helps her approach each case with a "fair" mind set. Judge Pokorny acknowledges that her research on cases could be faster. Her professional goals are to continue moderating an Office of Judicial Administration sponsored dialogue on the issue of domestic violence so that there is a positive outcome and to continue working with the Office of Judicial Administration to improve our court system. The Commission received survey responses from 22 attorneys and 36 non-attorneys. Survey results showed that 100% of attorneys and 90% of non-attorneys recommended that Judge Pokorny be retained in office. Judge Pokorny received an overall average score from attorneys of 3.51 on a 4.0 scale and an overall average score from non-attorneys of 3.29. She also received an overall average score of 3.67 from six appellate judges who responded. Judge Pokorny's scores exceed the required minimum average grade of 2.0 from each category of respondents.
