A 1978 graduate of Washburn University Law School, Pokorny began her legal career as a assistant district attorney with the Shawnee County District Attorney's office where she prosecuted criminal cases ranging from speeding to first degree murder.
For two years she
handled all cases involving sex offenses, including prostitution, promoting pornography, rape and aggravated indecent liberties with minors.
While in Topeka, Pokorny was an Adjunct Professor for Trial Techniques at Washburn University School of Law.
In 1981, Pokorny moved to her hometown of Independence, Kansas to become the Assistant County Attorney and, in 1985, she was elected County Attorney for a four year term.
entered into private practice, with an emphasis in family law, the enforcement and collection of child support, and criminal defense.
Pokorny is a recipient of the Kansas Bar Association Outstanding Service Award, recipient of Kansas Bar Association Recognition for Pro Bono Commitment, is a Kansas Bar Foundation Fellow, recipient of "Women Helping Women" award from Soroptimist International of Independence, and Business and Professional Women's Association "Woman of the Year" award.
is the mother of Brian and Mike, who both attend their parents' and maternal grandparents' alma mater, Washburn University
After practicing law in Independence, Kansas for over 25 years, Pokorny
relocated her practice to Lawrence, Kansas and is "of counsel" with The Law Office of David J. Brown.
