Saad Khalid Niaz (Habibian - Batch 1976)
Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz (Habibian - Batch 1976) Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz (Habibian - Batch 1976) Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz is an alumni of Habib Public School (1966-76) . He graduated in 1986 from Dow University of Health Sciences and proceeded to UK for his post graduation, where he acquired his MRCP followed by his CCST in Medicine and Gastroenterology which he received on completion of his specialist training from the West Midlands, UK. After having worked in UK for 12 years, he returned to Pakistan in 2001. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 2008. He is currently an honorary consultant and Director of Endoscopy at Surgical Unit 4 , Civil hospital, Karachi. Along with this he is Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Patel Hospital and Indus Hospital. Dr Saad K. Niaz has been actively working in Pakistan for the improvement in the fields of Gastroenterology and Liver Disease since his return to Pakistan. At the time he returned endoscopic treatment was limited to a very small number of centers across the country. It was very expensive and was also not of the highest standards and therefore most people were devoid of this very useful modality which is fundamental in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of conditions. He first started these procedures at Patel Hospital where by keeping the charges low, along with Zakat support, he was able to provide his expertise to the poor specially from JPMC and Civil Hospital as these facilities were not available. Realizing this in 2006 he became part of a unique project at Surgical Unit 4 which was located in Civil Hospital Karachi. He joined in an honorary capacity as Director of Endoscopy. The aim was to provide Endoscopic treatment free of cost of the highest quality not only to the poor people of Sindh but also from Balochistan and Southern Punjab. This facility has grown over the years to become one of the most advanced endoscopic facilities in the country. Not only has Dr Niaz provided his services now for over 10 years free of charge but has also established this center as an advanced training center where national and international experts have participated in many training workshops. This Center has performed over 10,000 advanced endoscopic procedures, more than any other center in the country which are all free of cost. He still continues to provide low cost care through Patel Hospital and Indus hospital,on a voluntary basis. Today due to him and his teams unique efforts no one in the province of Sindh and it's adjacent areas is deprived of advanced endoscopic treatment and this becomes an even bigger achievement as he continues to do it on an honorary basis. He has the honor of introducing many advanced endoscopic procedures in Pakistan like Spyglass Cholangioscopy (to look at the bile ducts), Enteroscopy (for the visualization of the small bowel) and Capsule Endoscopy (which uses a pill with a tiny camera). Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz is also a pioneer in this field for introducing many procedures in Pakistan such as the Oesophageal metallic Stent Placement, Endoscopic Pancreatic Pseudocyst Drainage, Colonic Stenting, Sphincteroplasty for the removal of the large bile duct and advanced pancreatic therapy. Three hands on Training courses are organised per year in collaboration with the UK at Civil Hospital, the only Center to do such courses outside the UK. Furthermore, one of the most serious and widespread issues faced in our society has been Hepatitis B and C. In 2007, along with other members, Dr Niaz started The Health Foundation. This was established before anyinitiative was taken by the Government and THFhas played its role in the prevention, treatment and awareness of Hepatitis B and C . To date over 3000 patients have been treated with Interferon, over 600,000 hepatitis B vaccinations carried out and a mother and child Hepatitis B prevention programme has been established in collaboration with GAVI Alliance .THF is involved in the first ever 'Sharp needles Disposal project' continuing in many hospitals and clinics in Sindh and Punjab. A comprehensive hepatitis prevention programme is a unique project which is being undertaken for the first time in the world in 8 districts of rural and urban Sindh and Punjab with the goal being to find ways to reducethe incidence of Hepatitis B and C. Through the Professional Education Foundation (PEF), another NGO that Dr Niaz is a founder member of has been helping poor students in professional colleges and universities with their fee and lodging. Over 1300 students from various parts of the country are currently being supported. He is also in the executive committee of Poor Patients Aids Society at Civil Hospital Karachi and chairman of an NGO running a Neonatal and Pediatric ICU established by the DOW alumni of 1986. All the above activities are performed on a voluntary basis. He was a finalist of Prestigious "excellence in patient care award " by the Royal college of Physicians 2015. n recognition of his services in the field of medicine he was awarded Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2013. He was also awarded the prestigious honor of "The Best Gastroenterologist " by the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology in 2012. In addition to this, he has been elected twice as the General Secretary and later as the Vice President of Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology & GI Endoscopy. 1 response to Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz (Habibian - Batch 1976)
