S. Hughes Melton, MD
S. Hughes Melton, MD, FAAFP, DABAM, is a family physician from Bristol, Virginia, who currently serves as the Treasurer of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation.
Dr. Melton is the VP, Chief Medical Officer for the Virginia Operations of Mountain States Health Alliance, a not for profit health system serving southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee.
In this position he serves as the physician leader for MSHA's Southwest Virginia region, bringing together the excellent medical staff, administration and governing board at each hospital to provide world-class health care for our patients and communities.

Dr. Melton is also board certified in addiction medicine and started HighPower, P.C., a patient centered medical clinic in Russell County, Virginia.

Prior to working with MSHA, Dr. Melton worked for twelve years at C-Health, P.C. in Lebanon, Va., where he provided full-spectrum family medicine services including, pediatric, geriatric, inpatient and outpatient care to people in rural southwest Virginia.
The Appalachian region in which he
works is marked by severe poverty, high levels of substance abuse, poor educational attainment and limited health care.

leadership in recruiting health professionals to what was once considered a medically underserved county.
Melton earned his medical degree and completed his family medicine residency at the University of Virginia School Of Medicine.
