S. Hughes Melton, MD, MBA, FAAFP, DABAM, President Elect
S. Hughes Melton, MD, MBA, FAAFP, DABAM, is a family physician from Bristol, Virginia, who currently serves as the President-elect of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. Dr. Melton is the Vice President, Chief Medical Officer for the Virginia Operations of Mountain States Health Alliance, a not-for-profit health system serving southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. In this position he serves as the physician leader for MSHA's Southwest Virginia region, bringing together the excellent medical staff, administration, and governing board at each hospital to provide world-class health care for our patients and communities. Most recently he orchestrated the creation of a graduate medical education program serving three of the hospitals in his region. He will graduate with his MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business in May 2014. Dr. Melton is also board certified in addiction medicine and started HighPower, P.C., a patient centered medical clinic in Russell County, Virginia. HighPower provides specialized clinical pharmacy consults, primary care, and addiction treatment services. Prior to working with MSHA, Dr. Melton worked for 12 years at C-Health, P.C. in Lebanon, Virginia, where he provided full-spectrum family medicine services including, pediatric, geriatric, inpatient, and outpatient care to people in rural southwest Virginia. The Appalachian region in which he works is marked by severe poverty, high levels of substance abuse, poor educational attainment, and limited health care. He was named AAFP 2011 Family Physician of the Year for his innovative work in the primary care treatment of addiction and chronic pain, and for his leadership in recruiting health professionals to what was once considered a medically underserved county. Melton earned his medical degree and completed his family medicine residency at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He enjoys running, church activities, and spending time with his family.
