S. Hughes Melton, MD, MBA, FAAFP, DABAM, is a family physician from Bristol, Virginia, who currently serves as the President-elect of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation.

Prior to working with MSHA, Dr. Melton worked for 12 years at C-Health, P.C. in Lebanon, Virginia, where he provided full-spectrum family medicine services including, pediatric, geriatric, inpatient, and outpatient care to people in rural southwest Virginia.
The Appalachian region in which he works is marked by severe poverty, high levels of substance abuse, poor educational attainment, and limited health care. He was named AAFP 2011 Family Physician of the Year for his innovative work in the primary care treatment of addiction and chronic pain, and for his leadership in recruiting health professionals to what was once considered a medically underserved county.
Melton earned his medical degree and completed his family medicine residency at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He enjoys running, church activities, and spending time with his family.
