"It was not an amateur event," said Capt. Ryan Derouin, a spokesman for the 1st Battalion of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, the American battalion responsible for security in Fallujah.

The Iraqi police killed at least four of the attackers, whose bodies were shown to U.S. military officers Saturday. They also say witnesses told them the insurgents hauled away four to five more dead.

Capt. Ryan Derouin, fire control officer for the 1st Battalion of the 505th, said Wednesday the operation targeted two people believed to be involved in the police station attack - a young male who allegedly led a team of shooters during the attack and a radical Islamic Imam from Fallujah.

"The Imam is known to be anti-coalition and an Islamic extremist," Derouin said.
Neither target was found during the raids, but soldiers discovered a cache of weapons and anti-coalition documents at the mosque. One Iraqi was detained at the mosque and will be questioned about the police station attack, Derouin said.
Derouin said the raids were a direct response to the police station attack. The Army had already detained eight individuals, two of whom are believed to be involved in the attack, in an effort to bring the culprits to justice, he said.
"Some of the individuals [believed to be involved] we have known about for some time," he added.
The Army will issue an arrest warrant for the Imam who evaded the raids, Derouin said.

But according to an e-mail I received on the morning of Sunday January 4 from Captain Ryan Derouin, my point of contact at FOB Volturno who I had met in person there the day before, they were transferred at around 0900 local time on January 4 to the 3rd Brigade Detention Facility at St Mere, next to the Volturno base, for "further processing".

When they were leaving the first base, soldiers were laughing and saying "Cuba, Cuba".
