Ruth Christensen, an assistant voice professor at BYU and one of the featured soloists, said the tradition has a particular resonance with the Christmas season. "It's such a standard," Christensen said."It's part of our mentality about Christmas in the Mormon culture." Christensen said audiences enjoy participating with the choir rather than just sitting through the concert. "They enjoy trying their own hand at singing the wonderful choruses," Christensen said.

BYU NewsNet - KBYU-FM to honor German composer

Ruth Christensen, assistant professor of voice at BYU, directs the centennial celebration. "Within the history of German art song, few composers are held in as high esteem as Hugo Wolf... owing to the exquisite refinement in the style and astonishing fit of text to music," Christensen said. Christensen said Wolf called his song collections "poetry."Christensen also said that Wolf titled the collections by the name of the poet rather than by his own name. "This gives emphasis to the fact that, above all else, the text was the critical part of the work," Christensen said.
