For more than two decades Russell worked as a reporter and staff writer at The Star-Ledger, New York Newsday, the New York Daily News and the Los Angeles Times newspapers and as a freelance writer for publications such as The Guardian (London).
He was a member of the New York Newsday team awarded the Pulitzer Prize for spot news reporting in 1992 and has received awards from the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Journalism Center on Children & Families, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Garden State Association of Black Journalists and other media and social service organizations.
