Russ Williams
Senior Vice President, Crisis and Issues Management
From startups to global corporations, Russ has built a career in public relations that has touched a bit of everything. The common thread running through every effort is the application and continued development of his business acumen.
As part of Cohn & Wolfe's Corporate Practice, Russ provides counsel to clients on crisis matters and develops programs to navigate complex issues. He provides crisis communications planning, strategic counsel, on-site support, executive media coaching and reputation management. Based in Atlanta, Russ services clients in the risk management, pulp and paper, and hospitality industries. He supports national and international client needs across the entire Cohn & Wolfe network.
Beyond his agency role, Russ understands the client side of business. He held multiple roles within Delta Air Lines, ultimately serving as the company's national media spokesman. In that time, he worked through contentious labor negations, creation of a global alliance and continual scrutiny from the federal government. Russ also served as director of media relations for AGL Resources, helping the company navigate issues surrounding the deregulation of the natural gas industry in Georgia and challenges involving an energy trading subsidiary.
In past agency roles, Russ provided strategic counsel, executive training, media relations, internal communications, litigation support, and community relations in the public and private sectors. His crisis experience includes a wide variety of efforts, from natural disaster recovery to protecting personal and corporate reputations from lawsuits. Russ also gained extensive experience within the government sector, directly supported government agencies in managing political challenges and developing programs to target and involve the public. His client-side government experience ranges from securing legislation targeting land use rights to government approval for implementation of healthcare service offerings.
Russ began his public relations career in 1994. He holds a degree in communication from the University of Maryland and is a member of the Public Relations Society of America.

Atlanta, had next to no money, no job interviews scheduled and he knew only one other person in the city. Luckily, that person had an extra room. Upon arrival, Russ turned to the want ads in search of a position that would launch his PR career. "After only two days in Atlanta, I had my first job. I was hired to sell frozen meat over the phone. That lasted just under two weeks." Russ soon found opportunities to freelance write and picked up project work for several companies, which led to a position with a public relations agency. After several years of agency experience, Russ went to Delta Air Lines where he ultimately served as national media spokesman. From there, he joined AGL Resources as director of media relations. Through his career, Russ has built a broad set of public relations skills, with crisis communications and issues management as his specialties.

Creative Loafing Atlanta | NEWS | AGL RUNS OUT OF GAS AT GOLD DOME, 1 July 2002 [cached]
AGL Director of Communications Russ Williams says the legislation isn't as bad for the company as it seems."In terms of direct impact on Atlanta Gas Light, there wasn't anything in the legislation that was particularly beneficial, but on the other hand, there was nothing dramatically negative for the company," Williams says.
Williams may be overly optimistic.Take the case of Sequent Energy Management, an AGL subsidiary spun off last September that makes money by selling capacity in AGL's gas pipelines.
Those pipes are technically owned by AGL customers since the company is a public utility. The fact that Sequent and AGL were profiting from the public, without kicking anything back to customers, didn't play very well at the Gold Dome.
"I don't know that legislators are attacking Sequent and their role," says Williams. The PSC is going to have to look at a number of components of the new legislation and develop some rules and some procedures around how they are going to implement these components and I think that [Sequent's profits] would fall into that case. There's no clear-cut path on how that particular [issue] will be addressed."
On other matters, the General Assembly even had to scold AGL about its behavior.
The legislation creates performance standards that AGL has to meet, or face a $15,000 fine, and it's now a law that AGL "cooperate with each marketer and each regulated provider of natural gas."
