A tad bit of winter

Winfield's public works director Russ Tomevi said crews worked last night and early this morning to make major roads in town passable.Six trucks put about 85 tons of sand salt on the roads to help with thawing. "I think we're in good shape now," Tomevi said."We had some good thawing this morning." There were minor car accidents in town, and that mostly had to do with the fact that temperatures dropped well below freezing and made rain-soaked roads slick.Ice is much more difficult to remove than snow, Tomevi said. The situation was worse early this morning when temperatures dropped even lower. "Without traffic on the road overnight, the streets can get slick," he said.

Cowley snowed under

Winfield's public works director Russ Tomevi said snow removal has gone well in town. Most main roads are easily passable, and the city is working to remove piles of snow in the middle of downtown streets. "We haven't had anything out of the ordinary," Tomevi said. City crews had it a little easier, he said, because school was canceled and "we didn't have to try and clear out places for buses and other school traffic." Smaller towns in the county have reported no problems. "We're keeping up.
