Rusdi Kirana, the head of Lion Air, Indonesia's largest private airline, and an adviser to President Joko Widodo, has been appointed as the new Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia.
He has relinquished all his previous positions to take up the prestigious new post. Rusdi appreciated President Joko Widodo for granting his request to become an ambassador. "I have never been offered to become ambassador to any nation but I pleaded to the president that I wished to become ambassador, especially to Malaysia," he said. After undergoing tests and being unanimously approved by the House of Representatives (DPR), Rusdi was inaugurated in the post in May. Speaking on his priorities, Rusdi said he would concentrate on settling the issue of Indonesian women migrant workers in Malaysia. "It's like a call for duty, not only solving the problem of illegal workers but especially women migrant workers. There is no one in this world who wants his children to work abroad in the informal sector. I promise to put the priority on tackling the issue of huge number of migrant workers there," he said. Rusdi said he has implemented a pilot scheme in Manado, North Sulawesi. Rusdi also said that in addition to resolving problems related to migrant workers, he would be promoting tourism. "After Idul Fitri, we plan to cooperate with the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta to have a joint promotion. He said. He has served as a member of President Jokowi's board of advisers (Wantimpres). In his role as head of Lion Group, he presided over the signing of a deal with Boeing for the purchase of 230 Boeing 737 aircraft worth $22.4 billion. The signing was witnessed by then US President Barrack Obama in Bali during his state visit to Indonesia in 2011. A self-made man, Rusdi was born on August 17, 1963 in Cirebon, West Java.
