News in Brief

So far they have been competing with one another in these two areas," Rudi J. Pesik, chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (A-BAC), said.He said ASEAN member countries were competing to attract foreign tourists from the US, Japan and Europe.Actually, Rudi said, the intra-ASEAN tourism market was big enough. He also hoped the summit would result in stronger cooperation among ASEAN member countries to build infrastructures to attract investment not only from ASEAN member countries themselves but from western countries and multinational companies as well."We hope ASEAN can be seen as an entity in the future," he said.He said the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) which was supposed to promote intra-ASEAN trade would not be able to attain optimum effectiveness soon because its development would still be constrained by non-tariff barriers and visa problems.
