Erpf brings contemporary art to life
...
Rosemary Erpf, Ph.D., tells her art history students stories from her years as a New York gallery owner and director.
...
When Rosemary Erpf, Ph.D., talks about contemporary artists, she often draws on her own experiences as a New York gallery owner to provide firsthand accounts.
"I think I'm known for my stories," said Erpf, who teaches art history at the Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta."I've worked with a lot of artists.I've known Christo and Jeanne-Claude for many years , I tell students how Christo goes berserk every so often when something isn't folded exactly as he likes.I also tell stories I've heard over the years about [Willem] DeKooning."
After working in galleries in Boston for several years, Erpf served as director of the R.C. Erpf Gallery in New York City from 1983-88.She said the confluence of time and place provided a unique climate in the art community.
"It was a great time to have a gallery , The East Village and lower Broadway scene was hot," she said.
...
"My friend Marcia Tucker's New Museum of Contemporary Art opened on lower Broadway, a block from my space," said Erpf.
...
Erpf ultimately had to close the gallery because of family issues."It really does take up 125 percent of your life," she said.
However, she landed a job filling in for the director of the Marian Goodman Gallery, who took an 18-month maternity leave.
"It's probably one of the top five contemporary art galleries in the world," she said.
...
Having taught at both liberal arts universities and art colleges, Erpf said she definitely enjoys art students.
"What I love about teaching students with an art background is that they find things I have never seen before in works of art," she explained.
...
Erpf has conducted a workshop titled "What Every Artist Needs to Know," which covers practical aspects of the art world, and she is scheduled to present it again at SCAD-Atlanta in May.
She also remains active in the New York art world with her work as a consultant, which takes her to the city approximately every five weeks, she said.
"I have for years advised people who are collecting art.I am hired to pre-select and guide them to see the pieces I've selected," she explained.
