CatEx DCA member GI Solutions has announced that its founder Ron Welch passed away on Thursday 8th March at the age of 80.
In a career spanning some 65 years, Welch saw printing developments from hand transferring of images onto litho stones to the adoption of high speed-digital printing.
Born in 1931 in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, Welch started work aged 15 as an apprentice printer, moving to England in 1957 to further his career. In 1961 he joined CAPS printing in London where he ultimately became works director. In 1967 he moved to Leicester as works director for Jay Print until he founded Colorgraphic in 1972, taking it public in 1987.
After Colorgraphic was sold in 1992, he founded Graphic Inline (now GI Solutions Group). Although he retired in 1999, Welch continued to win work on a consultancy basis in his native Scotland well into his 80th year.
