"Those three systems are considered the dominant systems in the market, and those relationships extend back before the merger that created GHA," said Ron Booker, GHA's inhouse legal council and CEO of iMed Group, GHA's management company. "But GHA welcomes the opportunity to work with any quality hospital or ASC requiring anesthesia services."

For instance, our continuous quality improvement program has more than 40 criteria that we monitor for every case we do at every facility we service," Booker said.
"Since its inception, GHA leadership has recognized that professional business people are needed to handle the business side of providing service," Booker said. "With things like contracting with managed care companies, working with hospitals, compliance, and continuous improvement, having that expertise allows anesthesiologists to focus on providing care to patients instead of worrying about business matters."
For any medical group, communication can be a challenge. Because of its size, communication amongst providers can be even more difficult for an organization like GHA. With that in mind, the company is finding new ways to keep its anesthesiologists informed about developments within the company. All its employees use the same secure e-mail system, and most of its physicians us iPhones or Blackberrys, which Booker said GHA can use to send things like monthly compliance videos.
"It just isn't practical to get all the doctors together at one time to discuss issues like compliance issues," said Booker. "Using technology is a huge part of how we can disseminate information to our anesthesia providers in the field."
With the healthcare world seemingly frozen by the reform debate, GHA's long-term growth plans aren't set in stone. But Booker believes GHA will eventually expand into areas outside anesthesia and begin bringing on other hospital-related services such as neonatology, radiology, and pathology. Geographically, Booker said GHA will likely stay focused on the greater Houston market because services tend to be regionalized. He said managed care groups typically don't sign statewide contracts, signing regional contracts instead, and rates can vary greatly depending on the region.
However, GHA stockholders have formed another entity called Paragon Healthcare Management Group, a physician management company that has the ability to go into other markets in other parts of the state and outside the state. Paragon will be able to take the resources, experience, and knowledge gained from working with GHA and take it into other markets without threatening the successes that have already been achieved in Houston. That is important for Booker because in the end, everything GHA does comes down to one thing-serving its clients well by treating each individual patient well.
"Anesthesiologists caring for each patient on every case is what is most important. That is our constant focus, making sure we never lose sight of what is most important, the patient," he concluded.
