Arrived at Melville Vineyards about 9:00 to meet with Ron Melville. Gracious host as always, Ron showed us around his fabulous place. Full kitchen, several sleeping quarters upstairs, a beautiful tasting room, and a spotless winery. Melville's winemaker, "Spotless" Greg Brewer, was due back in town later in the day, in time for Saturday's Futures Tasting at the Wine Cask. But, without Greg in attendance this morning, Ron didn't want to play around with the barrels, and we didn't blame him.

After Ron gave us the VIP tour of the winery, we headed for the tasting room to sample some of the past, present, and future Melville selections. Ron introduced us to Barbara, Melville's tasting room manager, who poured us through several current releases.
For some background info on Melville, you can see my Nov '00 in-depth visit notes . But, to bring you up-to-date, the winery, the wines, and the winemaker have each become quite well-known since then, being written up recently by Parker, the Spectator, and probably Tanzer by the time this is written. Suffice to say, Melville is doing a fabulous job with all of their wines.
Melville's up to about 10,000 cases now, and Ron's added additional acreage out in the Cat Cyn area (just to the North, near Los Alamos).

Melville places great importance on being an "Estate" winery, meaning they work exclusively with fruit from vineyards that they own and tend to themselves, in addition to controlling all aspects of making and selling their wines.

Ron Melville - Founder and President "farming and family has and always will be the core of Melville Vineyards" Ron grew up with a love of gardening, a passion passed down to him from his father. Ron eventually turned his attention to grape growing, and since 1987, has devoted his life to studying viticulture and growing high-quality grapes in northern California. In Sonoma County's Knights Valley, Ron successfully grew Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. At that time, his grapes were sold to renowned producers such as Geyser Peak Winery, Dry Creek Vineyards, and Chateau St. Jean. In 1996, Ron and his sons developed 82 acres of vineyards in Lompoc, where he planted 16 different clones of Pinot Noir, 6 different clones of Chardonnay, and 9 clones of Syrah.

In 1997, working side by side with his father Ron and brother Brent, Chad helped to establish Melville's Estate vineyards in the Sta.
