Getting a business loan takes homework, and plenty of it - 2005-11-07, 7 Nov 2005 [cached]
"The most common reason small businesses are declined when requesting financing is due to a lack of preparation on the part of the borrower," said Ron Carlson, branch manager of the Small Business Administration's Cincinnati office.
That preparation needs to start early.A common mistake on the part of business owners is to go to the bank to ask for a loan and expect to get the money within a week or so.Owners should plan to approach the bank 30 to 60 days ahead of time, Carlson said.
"If you're prepared enough and it happens quicker, you can be pleasantly surprised," he said.
The business plan plays a huge role, Carlson said.
"It helps the banker understand the business, understand the market and the company's place in the market," he said.
Small business owners tend to overlook the fact they'll be asked to sign a personal guarantee, Carlson said.
