Correspondents Report - Ukrainians brave the cold to protest against election process [cached]
To look at the reasons behind the crisis - and to understand the motives of those hundreds of thousands of people braving sub zero temperatures to support Viktor Yushchenko, Fran Kelly spoke to Roman Wolczuk, research fellow in Ukrainian foreign policy at Wolverhampton University.
ROMAN WOLCZUK: The western Ukrainians have seen some hope of democratic reform and political economic reform, which is very much in line with their ambitions and their desire to move closer to Europe.
ROMAN WOLCZUK: No, it's not as simple as that, because Mr Yushchenko, while being pro-western is not anti-Russian.
ROMAN WOLCZUK: Yes, the division, I would suggest to you, is more apparent than real, in so far as you could argue it's more about pro-reformers and anti-reformers, and many of the anti-reformers are found in eastern Ukraine, and many of the pro-reformers are found in western Ukraine.
ROMAN WOLCZUK: Many western Ukrainians have been travelling westwards, they've been going out there for work, for jobs, they have very close ties with people in the west.
ROMAN WOLCZUK: It's very hard to say still, even at this moment, because the disproportionate number of the people who find themselves in Kiev are not representative of the whole country, they are representative of central and western Ukraine.
ROMAN WOLCZUK: First of all, instability in Ukraine is a deeply dangerous thing, more so than probably in any country in Europe.
HAMISH ROBERTSON: Roman Wolczuk, research fellow in Ukrainian foreign policy at Wolverhampton University.
