Roman Roth Winemaker/Technical Director A gifted winemaker, Roman can be heard singing in an enviable tenor voice amid the barrels in the winery cellar - But, most of all he gives great "voice" to his wines - produced by experience that bridge wine cultures across three continents and stems from a dream of a 16-year old German boy in Rottweil located in the Black Forest region. In pursuit of his dream, Roman began a three-year apprenticeship at the Kaiserstuhl Wine Cooperative Oberrotweil while also attending technical school. Roman traveled to the United States and worked at the Saintsbury Estate in California and then to New South Wales, Australia, at Rosemount Estate. Returning to Germany, Roth became a winemaker at WinzerkellerWiesloch near Heidelberg. He earned his Master Winemaker and Cellar Master Degree from the College for Oenology and Viticulture in Weinsberg. In 1992 Roth became the first winemaker at Wölffer Estate Vineyard. Roman established the estate's wines' distinctive character - European elegance combined with the typicity of Long Island terroir. Roman has dedicated himself to promoting not only the wines of Wölffer Estate, but the wines of Long Island. He has consulted with many Long Island vineyards. Roth's contribution to quality winemaking on Long Island was recognized at the April 2003 East End Food & Wine Awards (judged by the American Sommelier Society), where he was named "Winemaker of the Year." Besides Fry and Cannac, other winemakers who assist producers at Premium include Sean Capiaux, a veteran of Pine Ridge, Jordan and Peter Michael wineries in California and Jamesport Vineyards on Long Island, who now works at O'Shaughnessy Estate Winery in Napa's Howell Mountain appellation; Gilles Martin, a Frenchman who previously made wine for Roederer Estate in California's Anderson Valley and Delas Freres in the Rhone, and is now head winemaker at Martha Clara; and Roman Roth, winemaker and general manager of Wolffer Estate Vineyards.

As a German-born winemaker with Riesling in his blood, Mr. Roth is always asked, Why the heck don t you make Riesling? In 2007, with one of the best vintages on L.I., he has finally created a Riesling he is proud to add to the Grapes of Roth label. Mr. Roth's aim is to create the East Coast's most sought-after wines and to further establish Long Island as a region that can produce wines of outstanding quality. Mr. Roth believes that with the best fruit handled with meticulous attention, a passionate approach and years of experience, he can make a wine that stands up to the best in the world.
