A reported mobile home fire in Alna January 17 turned out to be the kind of fire call Assistant Alna Fire Chief Roger Whitney said he is happy to get: the kind that turn out to be no fire at all.

Mutual aid is used now for such fires, according to Alna Asst. Fire Chief Roger Whitney, who was not at the fire although Alna Fire Dept. went to the scene."We've had a couple of dryer fires that have turned out to be structure fires so the fire departments are starting to get mutual aid rolling," Whitney said."We're starting to treat dryer fires like structure fires."As a result of the response quick response, the fire was out by the time Alna firefighters and equipment got to the home."Wiscasset was very right in calling mutual aid on that," Whitney said."It's better to be safe than sorry."Whitney emphasized the importance of mutual aid for any fire."No one department has enough to handle events on their own," he said.He urged people to make sure they clean their dryer's lint filters after every use, and to also clean their vents and vent hoses on a regular basis as well.Dryer fires are becoming a common occurrence and could very easily avoided by taking those precautions, he said.

The Wiscasset Middle School variety show proceeds this year will be donated to Roger Whitney and his family. In the past, our variety show has been organized and directed by Roger Whitney the school music director." "Unfortunately, Mr. Whitney's family home was destroyed by fire and he is in the process of rebuilding," she said. Whitney, who is an Alna firefighter, helped fight the fire at his home on the Dock Road, which was severly damaged.The fire pulled volunteer firefighters from Newcastle, Wiscasset, Jefferson, Whitefield and Nobleboro. The fire was so intense, in 80-degree heat, and high humidity, that three Alna firefighters and one Jefferson firefighter were taken to the hospital, including Whitney who was kept overnight.Whitney said at the time of the fire, he was grateful for the good training he received as a firefighter. Whitney, his wife Beth, who is a teacher at the Woolwich Central School, had lived in the Alna home for 17 years, along with their two children, Laura and Ray, as well as their seven cats. The original part '""-of the house was built in 1790, and is still structurally sound. "I started restoring this house when I bought it 17 years ago, Whitney said at the time of the fire, "and we can do it again."

He noted that 96 people signed the department's petition to put the ownership question on the next town meeting warrant. "The townsfolk are going to be furious and they're going to see it for what it is - it's maneuvering," Whitney said. Pendleton said they hadn't yet figured out what his agenda is; Whitney eventually said, "Your agenda is political gain.
