Roger Simon joined Legacy in 1999 as Director and Chair of the Robert S. Dow Neurobiology Laboratories. Dr. Simon's deep commitment to research stems from an extensive background as a clinician and educator. After completing undergraduate work at Penn State, he received his M.D. from Cornell University, did his clinical training at New York Hospital and UCSF, and was a post-doctoral fellow at The Maudsley Hospital in London. He was the Chief of Neurology at San Francisco General Hospital from 1981 to 1994, during which time he was also a professor of neurology at the University of California at San Francisco. Prior to joining Legacy, Dr. Simon was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
In addition to his research responsibilities, Dr. Simon maintains a clinical practice in neurology, seeing patients by referral in a weekly clinic at Legacy Good Samaritan, and holds adjunct faculty appointments at Oregon State University and Oregon Health and Science University. He is the author of more than 150 journal articles and the textbook Clinical Neurology, now in its 5th edition.
A significant theme of Dr. Simon's research is that potent endogenous mechanisms of neuroprotection are encoded in the human genome, and that a subset of genes expressed during cerebral ischemia determines whether or not cells survive.
