Roger Bugby, Barry's stepfather, worked as a scaffolder for Balfour Beatty at the Isle of Grain Power Station from approximately 1971 to 1976.It was during the course of his work as a scaffolder that Roger Bugby came into contact with asbestos dust.By the end of the working day his work clothes would be covered with the lethal dust.He would then take his work clothes home every evening bringing thus introducing the deadly contaminant into the domestic environment.

Unaware of any dangers, the young boy would climb onto his stepfather's lap when he arrived home at the end of the day, therefore breathing in whatever asbestos remained on Bugby's clothes.
