Tributes paid to the life of Roger Bigley, former LDSM Artistic Associate and Artistic Director
Wednesday, 12 June 2013
Tributes have been sent from across the world in tribute to the life of Roger Bigley, a long time violist and tutor, and Artistic Director at Lake District Summer Music from 1996 to 1998, who died on Sunday 9 June after a short illness.
Roger was best known as the founding viola player of the Lindsay String Quartet (1965 to 1985) and then as Assistant Head of Strings at the Royal Northern College of Music. Roger joined LDSM in the late '80s, playing a vital part as Artistic Associate from 1992 and becoming an Artistic Director in 1996 before retiring in 1998.
LDSM Founder & Artistic Director Renna Kellaway, says: "Roger Bigley was an obvious successor to Rodney Slatford as Artistic Associate. He brought vast experience and knowledge coupled with generous warmth and enthusiasm to the aspirations of LDSM. It was always a delight working with him, exchanging ideas freely. One of these has resulted in the expansion and establishment of LDSM Young Artist concerts. This series now plays a major role in offering our young musicians the professional opportunity so vital in building careers. It is a legacy from which Roger himself would derive so much pleasure and would allow himself the indulgence of a cigar in celebration I am sure!"
Andrew Lucas, LDSM Senior Executive Officer, says: "Roger was one of the warmest and kindest people I have met.
