"I have 52 students in the group and 28 are brand new," said M-CHS band director Rodney Ritthaler, who graduated from M-CHS in 1984. "It's a young group. Once they come in and stick with it, they get better at the high school level."

"There were about 500 students that sent in tapes," said M-CHS Music Program Director Rodney Ritthaler. "To make it is a tremendous honor and reward for a lot of hard work and dedication."
Ritthaler said that auditions began in November and eight M-CHS students were selected, but four were participating in a Knowledge Bowl competition and couldn't make the trip.

Ritthaler said the feeling of accomplishment is what it's all about as he watches his students grow as musicians.
"When you're getting good enough to make All-State Band or honors band or even playing in the ensembles here, which are pretty complex, it's not only sheer joy of producing and playing music, but they take that and transfer it to other aspects of their lives," Ritthaler said.
Ritthaler has been teaching music at M-CHS for 23 years.

MCHS Band Director Rodney Ritthaler thanked the board for approving the band trip to Indianapolis.MCHS took fifth place at the recent 17-band national competition.He said the band students' conduct was good and things went well.
Ritthaler said he'd like for the band to make this trip every two years, adding that it's an effective attraction and retention tool for the band.

"That's OK," Ritthaler said after hearing the final results."The top three bands were very close.
"They played the best they had all year," he added.
Ritthaler mentioned some of the year's challenges earlier, noting this had been one of his most difficult seasons for getting the band in shape because he had such a high number of freshmen.
