The victim, identified as Steven Lee Howell of Muddy Creek Road in Spring City, had been arrested on a domestic assault charge, Rhea County sheriff's detective Rocky Potter said in a Friday news conference.
At the hospital, Potter said, Howell "became belligerent" and was "aggressive physically and verbally."
Howell struggled with one deputy in a treatment room and managed to get his service weapon, Potter said.
Howell didn't fire the stolen weapon, Potter said, and no one else was injured, Potter said.
Potter said Howell had a criminal record that included domestic charges.

Rhea County Sheriff Department Detective Rocky Potter testified Wednesday afternoon. He said the couple told him they would make the boy drink dishwashing liquid and eat cigarette butts - all as a punishment for not going to bed at night. Potter said the couple also admitted to often whipping Landon.
"I saw numerous bruises across [the boy's] forehead and scalp, two black eyes, and a small scratch on his lower chin," said Potter.
Deputies found the boy dead inside a camper on Cawood Road on August 30th. His mother told investigators that he fell while playing on a swing set.
During cross-examination, the defense questioned how Potter can prove that the bite marks are from the couple. They also want to know why Potter has never asked if the couple's testimony matches up with what the couple told the Department of Children Services.

Potter says the woman was not held with the general population but stayed separately in a visitation room - that had a bed.

Investigator Rocky Potter with the Rhea County Sheriff's Department was in the area of Black Oak Ridge when a 911 call when out that a man was attempting to break in the front door of a Black Oak Ridge Road home on Wednesday. The caller reported that after the front door thwarted the man, he picked up a stick and headed around the back of the house.
When Potter arrived a few minutes later, he found a back window pried open. After Sgt.Dean Cranfield arrived to back up Potter, Potter told Cranfield to watch the front door.
At the back window, Potter identified himself as a police officer and yelled that he was entering the home.As Potter climbed through the window, he heard someone running through the home.
But when Potter spoke with the homeowner, he learned that she was indeed the man's mother-in-law, but that he did not have permission to break into her home.
While Potter, Cranfield and Detective Chris Hall talked with the suspect, Robert Songer, 34, they spotted a red pickup truck driving by, and Songer said that was the person he had called to pick him up.When the truck sped away, Potter then alerted area law enforcement agencies to watch for the truck.
Meanwhile, when the officers searched Songer, they found his pockets full of rings and other jewelry stolen from the home and ultimately identified by his mother-in-law, Potter said.
Potter arrested Songer and charged him with aggravated burglary and theft of property worth less than $500.
Potter charged her with theft of property worth less than $500.
When he went to the Songers' apartment, Potter learned that neither of them had a job and that a Randy Donaghy, 47, had been living with them and supporting them for a couple of weeks and had a job at Lear Corp.
Potter was particularly interested in that information since the Songers have two young girls and Donaghy is a registered sex offender.
Donaghy showed up at Dayton City School Wednesday afternoon to pick up the two little girls, but, alerted by Potter, DCS Resource Officer Justin Jackson turned Donaghy away empty-handed.
Donaghy had been convicted of several sex offenses against children prior to 1995, according to Potter.
Further charges of child neglect are also pending against the Songers, according to Potter.
