ROBIN SHEPPARD - Hotelier and Recoverer of Guillain-Barre Syndrome
has been in hotels for as long as he
can remember, picking up a number of awards and prizes along the way.
In 1995 he steered the Bath Spa Hotel to the UK's top accolade, before forming Bespoke Hotels in 2000 alongside his partner, which has subsequently grown into the UK's largest independent hotel group, and now boasts over 100 properties spanning the length and breadth of the country.
Although a caterer at heart, Robin enjoyed a brief detour into the world of design in 1988 when he created the Tynant Water Company, which continues to ship large quantities of its handsome blue bottles around the world, as well as penning a series of children's books, the "Icycle Tricycle" series.
Inspired by this success he
continues to run a soft drinks business to this day, and produces own-label soft drinks for a number of high street eateries.
Robin's greatest achievement, however, has been to fight back from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a debilitating illness which interrupted his
life in December 2004 and completely paralysed him from the neck down.
recovered sufficiently to write a book on the subject, 'A Solitary Confinement', the proceeds of which are given to the disease's UK charity, the Guillain-Barre Syndrome Support Group.
